Funding for Cloud Computing, Next Generation Internet and Data in Horizon 2020
Innovate UK and KTN are hosting a Horizon 2020 Cloud Computing and Data Information and Consortia Building Event on the 6th November in London.
Find out about the funding available for Next Generation Internet, Cloud Computing and Data through Horizon 2020, the EU’s largest research and innovation funding programme.
The event held on the 6th November in London is aimed at supporting collaboration across the UK and Europe.

The agenda will include a talk from the UK’s National Contact Point (NCP) about forthcoming 2019 call topics as well as a consortia building & proposal development workshop, which will give you a chance to team up with potential collaborators and brainstorm proposal ideas for the forthcoming calls topics covered by the event.

Next Generation Internet – An Open Internet Initiative
This work programme aims at developing a more human-centric Internet. The call comprises a Research and Innovation Action (RIA), which is focused in three areas for the 2019 call, and is based on supporting third party activity:
- Strengthening internet trustworthiness with electronic identities
- Service and data portability
- Open internet architecture renovation
RIAs should encourage, when relevant, open source software and open hardware design. Proposals seeking a contribution from the EU of €7 million are expected. As a reference, 80% of the EU funding should be allocated to financial support of third parties.
An empowering, inclusive Next Generation Internet
The challenge addressed in this call is to empower users to participate in the Digital Single Market by means on the Next Generation Internet.
The call is split into an Innovation Action (IA) and a Coordination Support Action (CSA).
The IA is for a Digital Learning Incubator to advance personalized and inclusive digital learning. The IA will use third party financial support (up to 90% of total funding) to advance the concept. An expected total contribution of €7million is considered suitable for this action.
The CSA is in the area of Digital Learning, and is expected to stimulate collaboration between all EU-funded FP7 and H2020 project on digital learning. A contribution of €1 million is anticipated for this call.
This call aims to reinforce cooperation and strategic partnerships between the EU and US in the area of Next Generation Internet. In 2019 Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs) are supported in which third parties can be supported that will enhance EU-US cooperation, reinforce collaboration and develop interoperable solutions. An EU contribution of €3.5 million is expected, of which 80% may be expected to be dedicated to financial support of third parties.
The challenge addressed in this call is the development of competitive cloud solutions based on advanced could platforms and services. The call is split into Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs) and a Coordination Support Action (CSA).
The RIAs will address at least one of the following areas:
- New modelling techniques and mechanisms to compose and coordinate resources across clouds
- Edge computing (fog computing) technologies that integrate the limited memory, storage, and computation of fog nodes
- New management strategies aimed to design and develop management of the set of resources brought by combining cloud, IoT, Big Data, and fog computing.
Proposals in the range of €3-5 million are anticipated.
The CSA will facilitate the awareness of stakeholders in research and policy matters related to cloud computing, and coordinate stakeholders in cloud computing and act as support R&D programmes by disseminating project results.
Supporting the emergence of data markets and the data economy
There is a lack of trusted and secure platforms and privacy-aware analytics methods for secure sharing of personal and proprietary data, which hampers the creation of a data market. This call will support Innovation Actions (IAs) to set up and operate platforms for secure and controlled sharing of “closed data”. Proposals shall address one, or both, of the following sub-topics:
- Personal data platforms to ensure respect of prevailing legislation to allow data owners to remain in control of their data and use
- Industrial data platforms to enable trusted and secure sharing and trading of proprietary and commercial data assets.
The IAs will link to and bring in industrial data providers (although not necessarily as consortium members). Proposals requesting an EU contribution of €4-6 million are expected.
