Mission to the USA: Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Posted on: 03/05/2018

KTN is seeking expressions of interest from businesses to participate in a mission to the USA in December 2018.

About
The mission is being coordinated by KTN’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Special Interest Group (SAF SIG) with the aim of facilitating collaboration between the UK and United States. Working with the Science and Innovation Network in the US, KTN will facilitate meetings with officials from the ASCENT programme and the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI). The mission incorporates attendance to the CAAFI Biennial General Meeting (4-6 December).

When?
Dates are yet to be confirmed but we expect the mission to take place in the first week of December 2018. KTN will only progress with developing a programme for the Mission to the USA if there is interest from a minimum of five companies.

How much will it cost?
There is a registration fee of $400 and delegates will be required to cover their flights, transfers, accommodation and meals.

Why participate?

– Opportunity to promote your business
– Opportunity to discuss collaboration on projects
– Gain an understanding of the aviation fuel specification and approval process
– Gain an understanding of industry challenges
– Gain an understanding of the sustainability requirements for alternative fuels

Check out the list of projects supported under the ASCENT programme for more details.

I’m interested. What should I do next?
Contact KTN’s SAF SIG lead Dr Michelle Carter to express your interest to participate or for more information.

Additional information

ASCENT

The Aviation Sustainability Centre – is a cooperative aviation research organisation co-led by Washington State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Also known as the Centre of Excellence for Alternative Jet Fuels and Environment, ASCENT is funded by the FAA, NASA, the Department of Defense, Transport Canada, and the Environmental Protection Agency. ASCENT works to create science-based solutions for the aviation industry’s biggest challenges.

A coalition of 16 leading US research universities and over 60 private sector stakeholders committed to reducing the environmental impact of aviation, ASCENT also works in partnership with international research programmes, federal agencies and national laboratories to create an all-inclusive research capability for whatever environmental impact obstacle the aviation industry faces.

CAAFI- Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative

The Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) has sought to enhance energy security and environmental sustainability for aviation through the use of alternative jet fuels. CAAFI is a coalition of airlines, aircraft and engine manufacturers, energy producers, researchers, international participants and U.S. government agencies. Together these stakeholders are leading the development and deployment of alternative jet fuels for commercial aviation.

CAAFI’s goal is to promote the development of alternative jet fuel options that offer equivalent safety and favourable costs compared with petroleum based jet fuel, while offering environmental improvement and energy supply security for aviation.
