Opportunities for mathematical sciences to plan engagements with the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund

Opportunities from International Centre for Mathematical Sciences and Isaac Newton Institute for mathematical sciences communities to engage with ISCF

In February 2019, the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), Isaac Newton Institute (INI) and the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) held a joint meeting in Edinburgh to explore how better the mathematical sciences can engage with the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF).

The output report made recommendations on how the mathematical science infrastructure and community could work together to provide support for the community in engaging. These recommendations were:

  • Strategic study groups targeting C-level people at large organisations who help to define the challenges. These could be clustered by similar methodologies (mathematical modelling / statistical methods etc) or by similar application areas (circular economy / electrification etc).
  • Specific meetings and workshops (using the UK mathematical science infrastructure of the INI and the ICMS) with UKRI leads to draw out the challenge areas.

From these report recommendations and consultation with the community, the INI, ICMS and KTN have been working hard to provide tailored support for the mathematical science community.  The contributions to the initiative and opportunities to get involved are below.

ICMS academia/industry meeting to explore ISCF opportunities

ICMS has funding to support academia/industry meetings enabling a community-led response to the ISCF initiative.  This will enable the community to identify and develop plans for activities which will support their efforts to engage with industry and the opportunities offered by ISCF.

Further guidelines are available here.

ICMS Research Partnership in Industry (RPI)

This ICMS programme invites applications from small groups of researchers (between two and four) from one academic institution who wish to organise a short, intensive period of research in Edinburgh with an industrial partner. This open call welcomes applications from researchers looking to engage with an industrial partner, specifically on the ISCF initiative.

Further guidelines are available here.

Dates for these opportunities will be finalised soon.

INI opportunities

There are also plans with INI and the Newton Gateway to Mathematics to provide a mathematical sciences programme with senior representatives of large industries. The programme aims to establish clear future projects and methods for exploitation with business leaders in the UK. This programme builds on the ICMS ISCF report to begin to develop the mathematical frameworks required to address these important industrial and societal challenges.
