Plan Plastic: The Million Pound Challenge & The Alliance to End Plastic Waste

Posted on: 15/02/2019

Two new projects have been launched globally to tackle plastic pollution.

Waitrose & Partners has launched Plan Plastic: The Million Pound Challenge, a £1 million grant fund to support innovative projects which tackle plastic pollution. The fund aims to cut plastic pollution in the UK, tackling littered plastic and reducing the amount unnecessary plastic used. The fund will supply grants of between £150,000 and £300,000 for innovative projects that examine how we use and dispose of plastic.

Over the past two years there as been an 800% increase in questions posed to Waitrose about plastic, and it’s therefore evident why Waitrose have launched this fund. The retailer has committed to making all own-branded packaging widely-recycled, reusable or home compostable by 2023, but wish to support wider efforts to improve the environment.

Apply to the fund by 24th February 2019. Find out more here.

In addition to the Waitrose’s Plan Plastic fund, Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) has been established to advance solutions that eliminate plastic waste in the environment, specifically in the ocean. The alliance is comprised of over 25 global companies, which will develop and bring to scale solutions to minimise plastic waste and transition to a circular economy for plastics. Over the next five years AEPW is committing $1.5 billion to ending plastic waste.

The Alliance was announced at a launch event in London, with global ambitions with the membership representing companies throughout the world, including chemical and plastic manufacturers, retailers and waste management companies. Examples of companies involved include Dow, BASF Cor, Procter & Gamble, and Veolia.
